nostalgia holidays
For me, the holidays have always been defined by music, recipes and sharing stories with friends and family of past traditions and holiday experiences. The old vinyl records come out, the wine is poured and the candles and tree lights are lit. Certainly this year will be different for most of us with regard to travel and gatherings, but these little treasures are all still possible. I’m actually looking forward to a quieter, more intimate holiday. Christmas Day for my family used to be a whirlwind of extended family, kitchen chaos, beds piled high with winter coats and wrapping paper everywhere. Lots of buzz and chatter, but not a lot of quality time. This year, I look forward to relaxing by the fire, having conversations with a few loved ones and sharing in the nostalgia that this time of year can bring. Family dynamics change so significantly over time and traditional holidays have a way of illuminating past loss. Perhaps this year will bring a few new traditions, but not without Kenny and Dolly in the background.
