keeping up with technology
Time and time again, I hear people longing for simpler times. A strong resistance to change and a wish to go back to the way things were. A world where we didn’t check our phones as the bookends to the day. (and everything in between!) A world where we went about our business face to face in real time. A world where we used our recall at the dinner table instead of our google brains. My Dad used to wish for a little plot of land off the grid in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, not far from where he grew up. A place where he could have a pint in the pub with some American draft dodgers, listen to incredible fiddlers and let the world of devices fall away.
It’s comforting to dream.
However, in our current reality, without technology, we would not be connected to our families and friends. We would not be able to shop online and have essentials delivered to our doors. In many cases we would not be able to work and pay the bills. We would not be informed as to what’s happening in the world. We would not be able to access the art, music, books and culture that are relatable, soul enriching, that challenge us and keep us engaged.
Holding many of us back is a touch of skepticism, the hurdle of learning something new, the language (which can feel condescending and foreign), old routines, the high cost for tech support and perhaps a lack of patience. There’s no reason why you should miss that broadcast of the symphony that you love or the birthday of your grandchild.
This week at Wild Honey...
We confront the hurdle together….. Apple tv, spotify, zoom, SONOS, new iphones, Facetime, Skype… I cannot wrap my head around keeping up with every platform and new device, but I do have a certain tenacity to figure it out.
